Omschrijving
Monopropyleenglycol (MPG) is een heldere, kleurloze en stroperige vloeistof met een licht zoete geur en smaak. Het is een veelgebruikte chemische stof vanwege de lage toxiciteit, hoge oplosbaarheid in water en goede mengbaarheid met verschillende organische oplosmiddelen. MPG is hygroscopisch en biologisch afbreekbaar. Voor zakelijk gebruik is het beschikbaar in technische, USP/FCC- en industriële kwaliteiten.
Kenmerken
- Hoog kookpunt en relatief laag vriespunt: Wordt daardoor vaak ingezet als component in koel- en antivriesmengsels.
- Niet corrosief
- Hygroscopisch: Neemt vocht uit de lucht op.
- Smaak: Licht zoet.
- Geur: Geurloos.

Toepassingen
Monopropyleenglycol wordt op verschillende manieren toegepast:
1. Farmaceutische industrie
In medicijnen, crèmes, gels, zalfjes en orale vloeistoffen als oplosmiddel of bevochtiger.
2. Cosmetica & persoonlijke verzorging
In lotions, deodorants, tandpasta’s en make-up vanwege het hydraterende effect.
3. Voedingsmiddelenindustrie
Als bevochtigingsmiddel, oplosmiddel en draagstof (E1520) in o.a. aroma’s, kleurstoffen en zoetwaren.
4. Bouw & kunststofindustrie
In de productie van polyesterharsen en coatings.
5. Industriële toepassingen
In koelvloeistoffen, antivries, remvloeistoffen, hydraulische vloeistoffen en als warmteoverdrachtsvloeistof.
