Omschrijving
Ethanol, ook wel ethylalcohol genoemd, is een kleurloze, vluchtige en brandbare vloeistof met een karakteristieke geur. Het is een veelgebruikte chemische stof in de industriële, farmaceutische en voedingsmiddelenindustrie. Ethanol komt zowel synthetisch als biologisch (biobased) voor en is één van de belangrijkste industriële alcoholen.

Toepassingen
Ethanol wordt op verschillende manieren toegepast:
1. Chemische industrie
Als grondstof in chemische syntheses, als reinigingsmiddel of verdunner.
2. Farmaceutische industrie
Als oplosmiddel in medicijnen en ontsmettingsmiddelen.
3. Voedingsmiddelenindustrie
In dranken (alcoholische consumptie) en als conserveringsmiddel.
4. Cosmetica
Als oplosmiddel en desinfectant in parfums, haargels en lotions.
5. Energie & transport
Als biobrandstof (bio-ethanol) of brandstofadditief.
